Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu

May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

What is Jivamukti Yoga?

"Jivamukti Yoga School is arguably the most famous and influential in the U.S., with its dynamic founders (Sharon Gannon & David Life), and legions of celebrity evangelical yogis...what is perhaps less well known is it is one of the only American yoga schools that integrates a truly radical understanding of ahimsa, non-harming, into its teachings, central to which is a deep care for animals and the environment... Jivamukti is about community and awakening"
— Satya Magazine

Jivamukti Yoga is a method which reintegrates the physical, philosophical & spiritual aspects of Yoga. Jivamukti was developed in 1984 by its world-famous founders, Sharon Gannon & David Life, and is practiced around the world.

Class involves an ever changing flow of postures (vinyasa) that is intended to challenge you on many levels. Each class revolves around a theme based on ancient wisdom and emphasizes the importance of practicing with an elevated intention. Chanting, meditation, and inspiring music are always included.

The name Jivamukti (pronounced Jee-va-mook-tee), taken from the Sanskrit jivan ~ individual soul / mukti ~ liberation, meaning liberation while still living in the body. The goal of this practice is to help you attain your fullest potential, in every sense -- physical, spiritual, intellectual and emotional.

The five tenets of Jivamukti Yoga are:

  1. Scripture ~ teachings from ancient Sanskrit scriptures.
  2. Bhakti ~ devotion; finding a greater purpose for our lives.
  3. Ahimsa ~ a non-harming, compassionate lifestyle.
  4. Music ~ use of chanting/uplifting music to elevate the spirit.
  5. Meditation ~ reconnecting to our true inner selves.

The Jivamukti method is one of nine internationally recognized styles
of Hatha Yoga. The others are: Ashtanga, Bikram, Integral, Iyengar,
Kripalu, Kundalini, Sivananda, and Viniyoga. You will find Jivamukti
Centers in NYC, Detroit, Toronto, London and Munich, and certified
Jivamukti teachers all around the world.
