Jivamukti Washington DC TEACHERS AGATHA GLOWACKI completed Jivamukti teacher training in 2006 then set about building the Jivamukti satsang in DC along with mentor and fellow instructor Janaki Jill Abelson. Agatha hopes to follow the teachings of founders David Life and Sharon Gannon, who emphasize that the #1 job of a yoga teacher is to see each student as a holy being. Her classes combine strong vinyasa sequences with teachings on scripture, chanting, meditation, and nonviolence, coalescing in a creative yoga practice with a spiritual message. Her blog Jiva Journeys explores interfaith understanding, ethical vegetarianism, and social/political action. CORY BRYANT graduated from Jivamukti Yoga teacher training in May 2008. He currently teaches at Flow, Body Smith, and Lululemon Clarendon and is popular wherever he goes. Born and raised in rural Indiana, with a PhD in Food Chemistry, Cory has dedicated his career to food sustainability and toward promoting a safe, environmentally and karmically responsible food supply. JILL ABELSON "JANAKI" is the founder and spiritual leader of the Jivamukti community in Washington DC where she has lived since 1985. Under the wings of beloved Narayani Nicole Nichols, Michael, Pearlie and Mikki the wonder cats, Jill completed her 800- hr level Jivamukti certification in 2008. A long-time environmental advocate featured in Yoga Journal, she's an advisor to the Green Yoga Association. Jill shares time between DC and California and is married to the ultimate eco warrior, Jeff, a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. TESTIMONIALS Dear Janaki, I don't think that I adequately expressed my gratitude for your class yesterday, in part perhaps because I didn't truly appreciate it until many hours later when I was still feeling the buzz. Of course, the Krishna-centricity of the class - from the Bhagavad-gita verses to the awesome music mix - made me particularly ecstatic. The thing you said during the class that made the deepest impression on me was that we shouldn't try to measure the results of our practice on the bodily platform; that the affect of yoga is subtle and works at a deeper level than a superficial analysis will reveal. That shook me out of my recent preoccupation with just the physical aspect of my practice... your personal attention during the class really helped me go beyond my limits, or at least my perception of my limits. I can honestly say that I've felt inspired to push myself, or I've been pushed, further in the two classes I've had with you than in any class prior to them. - Hari Kirtana Das The energy is palpable... and I feel an overwhelming unspoken support from the dedicated practitioners all around me. One particular class focusing on lovingkindness helped me express love and gratitude to my family right before the holidays. A huge iceberg of stress and frustration melted into an overwhelming, all consuming tidal wave of love and light. It demanded a huge release of emotions, and brought me to see them from a new place of true compassion and love. This is what true yoga is all about. I am grateful to Jill for being our teacher. I just needed you to know you're an amazing teacher... keep being yourself. I'll speak for the full class in saying..we love it :) - Suzanne I came home tonight feeling so happy, for the first time in such a long time. And I attribute some of that happiness to you. I adore you as a teacher, person, energy and love your spirit and every inch of you. I am lucky to have found you. And, I am sure that I am only one of many who feel this way. You always bring a lot of joy to my heart even when it is heavy. - Shakti I wanted to let you know that tonight’s class was, as usual, absolutely wonderful – and whoa, way hard. My shoulders and back are burning! I’ve been trying to get my roommate to do yoga for 2 years now and have been raving about your classes since I started coming.... she looooovved your class and is excited to come back for more…and she wanted me to tell you thank you. Thank you so much for being a wonderful teacher and inspiration. I feel so blessed to have found you and Agatha and Cory. - Brittanie I just wanted to thank you for the ICP (in-class private) this week - it was fantastic and I'm so glad I took the opportunity to try it. I was thinking recently about what a wonderful experience I have had at Flow and you have been a very important part of that. It wasn't until I started taking Jivamukti with you that my approach toward yoga and my understanding of the practice shifted in a profound way. I'm so grateful for all I've gained from your classes and truly admire so much of what you do and who you are. - Sarah You happen to be an excellent teacher--full of insight, wisdom and compassion, with a genuine ability to create community. Not to mention you walk the walk. - Danielle Jill is really a very eloquent as well as incredible proponent of the Jivamukti Yoga Method. - Sharon Gannon I just saw December's Yoga Journal.... I am just amazed thinking about how many people will be inspired (as well as how many people you have already inspired) to be more green. It is so amazing how much one person can change the world just by recognizing that their life and their actions matter. - Teresa At long last I am sitting to write some comments about the icp (in-class private) you gave me a few weeks ago. The experience was, start to finish, a revelation... inspiring on multiple levels, and really served to deepen my practice..... Your knowledge of technique, and how the body moves, and the firm security you present physically is assuring, instructive, and profoundly helpful. from a physical standpoint my practice progressed by many degrees in one session with you. Your spirit of encouragement was palpable throughout, helped fuel my determination to challenge myself and made the class a lot more fulfilling. You balanced well placed words with a supportive energy which really worked for me...your ease and willingness... really sets a wonderful tone. It energized me and gave me a sense of confidence. - Septime Thank you for all of your instruction and your beautiful example of what it means to be a yoga teacher. You have been my most influential teacher, and I have learned so much from you and have been so inspired by not just your teaching but your dedication to yoga and all beings everywhere and the world. - Teresa Your classes completely saved me this year. I don't know what I would have done without you. - M. There are times in your class, when you are chanting so beautifully, talking or doing a reading that I am overwhelmed and the tears roll out of my eyes...I finally have begun to find some peace again...and I attribute that to you and the other wonderful teachers I am blessed to have found...You are a wonderful teacher and I love your classes and you. - S. It’s the morning of my departure for (Jivamukti Teacher Training)…What a confluence of events to have brought me to this moment and I am so grateful. You have been such an important part of this journey…Right before Flow’s teacher training, I was praying for a female spiritual role model. I guess I was finally ready as a student because the “guru” appeared! … You’ll be in my thoughts and heart…. Agatha I saw you on the website for the Green Yoga Conference...You are Beautiful! David and I are totally aligned with what the Green Yoga conference is doing. We do want to present but so far we have had schedule conflicts. This year we are teaching our fabulous TT course. I love you! You live in my heart. I loved seeing you in San Fran. We share a love for music, I appreciate every moment with you and all the times you care to think of me and send me a word or two... thank you so much....you are special.... - - Sharon Gannon Jivamukti is the essence of what yoga should be. Energetic, fun and vigorous. It brings together a wonderful community of passionate, vibrant yogis. This style of teaching allows you to embrace life with kind - heartedness. I love the challenging flows met with compassionate teachings. This is exactly what Jill does so well, she challenges you in a safe, nurturing compassionate environment. She allows you to explore your edge and have a beautiful time doing it. – Johanna I am drawn to Jivamukti because it emphasizes that yoga is a fundamentally spiritual practice…Its being so athletic and physically demanding is in the service of cultivating self knowledge and awareness…I love the athleticism and challenge, especially how it’s combined with music. After class…I feel more connected to my truest sense of self. – Laura Jivamukti combines the best of what yoga has to offer…it touches on the spiritual elements that seem lacking in many contemporary yoga classes. Chanting and meditation brings this active form of yoga into the spiritual realm. You leave feeling more relaxed and more centered…Jivamukti reminded me what yoga really is and the potential it has to change lives. Jill has a wonderful energy that both challenges and centers you. I consider each class a blessing and would recommend her classes to anyone who wants to take their yoga practice to the next level. – Mariska We wanted to let you know we had a great time in Jill’s class Saturday…what a treat it is for your students that you are willing to bring in so many different types of people and classes. We now know a more rigorous style is more to our liking and are entertaining the idea of registering in fall for the vigorous class. We want to offer a heartfelt thank you. - David and Stacie (Erie PA) Thank you so much for coming to Annapolis...we absolutely loved your workshop and look forward to having you back soon...with much love... - Tina Thanks Jill! I'm so glad to get your last newsletter! Looking forward to seeing you this Wednesday and starting a new year together. Thanks for all you do to share Jivamukti with me and others. -- Leigh The best class I've had, outside of New York City." - Dan |
